A Cultural Route
Route of the Lleidatan Castles
Medieval castles and fortresses abound in the comarca, and guided visits are a good opportunity to find out about the history of the so-called "Castile of Catalonia".
These well-preserved fortresses waft visitors back in time to the Middle Ages, a period in which these lands marked the frontier between the Arab and Christian worlds.
The classic Route of the Lleidatan Castles comprises 5 fortresses: Mur, in Pallars Jussà; Montsonís, in La Noguera; Montclar, in Urgell; and Florejacs and Les Pallargues, in La Segarra.
A recent addition to the afore-mentioned is the castle of Vicfred, also in La Segarra, the interior of which has been recreated in the form of a manor castle from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Finally, the Medieval castle of Verdú, located in Urgell, is also open to visits-be sure to book in advance by contacting the town council (ayuntamiento).
